Choosing the Best Destination Wedding Photographer For You

As an adventure elopement photographer who travels the world to capture stunning wedding photos, I understand the importance of choosing the perfect destination wedding photographer. A destination wedding photographer should not only be skilled in their craft but also be experienced in capturing the beauty of different locations around the world. Let’s explore some things you should consider when hiring your destination photographer, tips for picking the right match, and where to find them!

Where do I begin looking?

There are a few different ways you may find your destination wedding photographer. You’ll want to consider hiring a photographer for their skill if they’re willing to travel with you to the destination (Hi! I love globetrotting!), or seeking a photographer local to your destination. Either way, you may find them using a Google search or on a wedding vendor website like The Knot, Zola, WeddingWire, or The Wedding Map (coming soon!).

Personal recommendations are one of my favorite ways to find vendors. If you have a destination wedding planner – ask them for recommendations and if the venue works with any specific vendors. Ask friends and family for recommendations. Put a call out on Facebook or Instagram. And see what comes up!

Check out social media for potential vendors – you can search using hashtags like #AdventureElopement #DestinationWedding #Photographer #ElopementPhotographer #DestinationPhotographer #TravelingPhotographer to find photographers willing to travel. And, use locations to find photographers that work around your destination.

Here are Some Tips for Choosing the Perfect Destination Elopement Photographer:

Look for Experience

It’s essential to choose someone who has experience photographing weddings in different locations. Look for a photographer with a portfolio showcasing their ability to capture the unique beauty of each location they have worked in. A photographer who is experienced in traveling for destination weddings will also be able to provide valuable insights and advice on planning your wedding in a new location.

Check for Availability

When planning a destination wedding, it’s important to book your photographer well in advance to ensure their availability on your wedding day. Check with your potential photographer to see if they are available on your wedding date and if they are willing to travel to your desired location.

Consider Their Style

Every photographer has their own unique style, and it’s essential to choose someone whose style aligns with your vision for your wedding photos. Look through their portfolio to see if their photography style matches your taste. Additionally, discuss your preferences with the photographer to ensure that they understand the aesthetic you are hoping to achieve.

Read Reviews

Reading reviews from past clients can give you valuable insight into a photographer’s professionalism, reliability, and overall quality of work. Look for reviews from past destination wedding clients to see how the photographer handled the unique challenges of photographing a wedding in a new location. You’ll find reviews on their website, social media channels, and if they’re listed on wedding websites like The Knot, WeddingWire, Zola, or The Wedding Map (coming soon!).

Discuss Your Budget

When choosing a destination wedding photographer, it’s important to discuss your budget upfront. A photographer experienced in traveling for weddings will be able to provide an accurate estimate of the costs involved in traveling to your desired location. They may also have suggestions for optimizing your budget without sacrificing quality.

Schedule a Consultation

Before making a final decision on a destination wedding photographer, schedule a consultation to discuss your wedding vision and to get to know the photographer. This will allow you to ensure that you feel comfortable with the photographer and that they understand your needs and preferences.

What to Ask Before Hiring Your Destination Photographer

You found one or a few photographers you think would be perfect for your destination wedding, and you’re interviewing them to help you decide they’re really the one. Here is a list of questions to ask your wedding photographer + here are questions that can help guide the conversation regarding your destination wedding:

  • Have you photographed in this country before?
  • Have you photographed in this type of climate?
  • What are your travel fees? And are there any hidden fees that may arise as far as photography is concerned?
  • How many days will you be at our destination?
  • Will you work with us planning our wedding?
  • Will you work with us during the wedding day?
  • Can you sort your own travel plans and accommodations?
  • What’s included in a travel photography package?

Signing the Contract

This is a big deal! This individual will memorialize. your day with pictures you’ll look back on for a lifetime. I’ve given you some tips for finding, choosing + interviewing the photographer, and now you’ll close the deal by signing a contract with them. Make sure you’re comfortable with the terms of the contract and that it covers everything you want it to – travel coordination, timing, cancellation policies, etc. With a contract in place, you and your photographer should stay in touch leading up to your destination wedding. Keep them in the loop about where you’re going, and what you want from them, and feel free to ask questions and ask for recommendations!
