Getting candid photos can feel hard on your wedding day, especially when there’s someone new photographing you, who you’ve possibly never met before. It can feel a little scary, nerve-wracking and awkward to be in front of the camera. But Don’t worry, we all feel that way for that first time the camera hits us. It may feel impossible to get candid wedding photos because of this. But don’t worry- I got you!
Your photographer knows what they’re doing, so the biggest step to getting candid photos on your big day is trusting them + their ideas. The second piece of advice to getting natural photos is to do what you would normally do. *cue the voice from spongebob saying ACT NATURAL* Yes I know. This sounds cliche, but you’ll get a much better result if you try to be yourself + proceed as you normally would.
The key to getting candid wedding photos is movement. If you’re not moving, you’re going to naturally feel a bit more stiff and unnatural. The best way to avoid this is even by incorporating the slightest movement in your photos, whether that be rubbing a hand on you or your spouses knee, shoulder, or face! This can also just make the moment feel a little more real.
Candid wedding photos are just that- well… candid. You wont necessarily have had to even remember you’re being photographed. That’s why you hire a photographer- to do all the thinking for you. As your photographer, I am always finding the best angle to tell a story and make sure i’m documenting your story exaclty as you experience it.
Chances are, your photographer will likely learn about the two of you beforehand. With my couples, I learn about how they interact with one another + if they tend to joke a lot or not. If they do use humor in their relationship, I tend to base some of their candid wedding photos off the humor they already are using.

“Lexi is a hardworking, organized, spontaneous and TALENTED photographer. She went above and beyond to capture incredible photos that have since been featured on David’s Bridal Instagram, twice!! She arrived at our wedding early to scope out the best spots for pictures. She stayed later than planned to capture special moments with our friends and family. She even helped me bustle my dress! She made me feel comfortable and made the entire day stress free. She was the perfect balance of getting every “formal” picture on my list and creating spontaneous, fun moments I could have never imagined despite all my planning. I cannot rave about Lexi enough, her natural talent, and the incredible business she has built!” – Elle + Jon
